TREATMENT OVERVIEW

Understanding LASIK Eye Surgery

What is LASIK?

LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) is a refractive surgery procedure that uses advanced laser technology to reshape the cornea, the clear front surface of your eye. By precisely altering the corneal curvature, LASIK corrects refractive errors including myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism, reducing or eliminating dependence on glasses or contact lenses.

How LASIK Eye Surgery Works

The procedure begins with the creation of a thin corneal flap using a femtosecond laser. This flap is gently lifted to expose the underlying corneal tissue. An excimer laser then reshapes the cornea based on your unique prescription, correcting the refractive error. The flap is repositioned, where it naturally adheres without sutures. The entire process typically takes 10-15 minutes per eye.

Conditions Treated with LASIK

Myopia (Nearsightedness)

Difficulty seeing distant objects clearly due to elongated eyeball shape or excessive corneal curvature.

Treatable range: -0.50 to -12.00 diopters

Hyperopia (Farsightedness)

Difficulty focusing on near objects when the eye is too short or cornea too flat.

Treatable range: +0.50 to +6.00 diopters

Astigmatism

Blurred vision at all distances caused by irregular corneal shape (uneven curvature).

Treatable range: up to 6.00 diopters

Presbyopia Solutions

Age-related near vision loss can be addressed with monovision or blended vision approaches.

Suitable for ages 40+

Expected Visual Outcomes

Clinical studies demonstrate that approximately 99% of patients achieve 20/40 vision or better following LASIK, with most attaining 20/20 or better uncorrected vision. Results vary based on individual factors including pre-operative prescription, corneal thickness, and healing response. Most patients notice significant vision improvement within 24 hours, with continued stabilization over several weeks.

ALL YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED

Frequently Asked Questions About LASIK

Are you a suitable candidate for LASIK?

You may be eligible for a LASIK surgery if:

  • You're between 21 and 45 years old.
  • You're tired of wearing glasses or contact lenses.
  • Your prescription has been stable for at least a year.
  • You have healthy corneas.

Schedule a consultation to determine your eligibility.

How is LASIK eye surgery done?

LASIK reshapes the cornea to focus light properly without glasses. There are 3 main methods:

  • Flap-based LASIK – A thin corneal flap is lifted, laser reshaping is done underneath, and the flap is replaced.
  • Surface ablation (PRK) – No flap; surface cells are removed before laser treatment. Safer for thin corneas, but slower recovery.
  • Lenticule-based (SMILE/SILK) – A small disc of tissue is removed via a tiny incision. Suited for myopia; long-term data still emerging.

The right technique depends on your cornea's thickness, shape, and power - not just the name.

Can LASIK be done in both eyes at the same time?

Yes. Both eyes are treated in the same sitting, which helps you recover faster and get back to routine sooner. It's usually not covered by insurance unless the prescription is very high.

Vision returns the next day, but avoid screens, direct water, and bright lights for the first week. Wear sunglasses outside and anti-glare lenses for night driving.

What tests decide whether I'm eligible for LASIK?

We run 5 essential tests to confirm eligibility:

  1. Cycloplegic refraction for accurate power.
  2. Keratometry to map corneal shape.
  3. Pachymetry to check corneal thickness.
  4. Pentacam tomography to rule out corneal weakness.
  5. Dilated retina exam for peripheral health.

Surgery is advised only if all results fall within safe ranges.

Is LASIK eye surgery completely safe?

LASIK is extremely safe when done after age 21, with a stable prescription (preferably ≤ -8 D), and a healthy cornea based on topography and thickness checks.

The laser acts only on the surface and the procedure is painless. Vision improves within 24 hours, though full healing takes 4-6 weeks. Dryness may last up to 3 months - lubricating drops help.

How is LASIK different from cataract surgery?

Both reduce glasses use, but address different problems using different tech:

LASIKCataract Surgery
Laser reshapes corneaUltrasound removes lens; IOL implanted
For refractive errors, after age 21For age-related lens clouding, usually post 50
No implant; heals in hours-daysPermanent lens implant stays in the eye

Over 50 and LASIK-ineligible? We may recommend clear-lens extraction with a multifocal IOL.
